What Does The Partnership Do?

The Partnership broadly conceptualizes environmental security as safeguarding against vulnerabilities induced by the abundance or scarcity of environmental assets and/or degradation. The Working Groups implement training and capacity building activities to improve the ability of partner nations to plan for and manage environmental security challenges.

To achieve its objectives, the Partnership:

  • Delivers an annual capstone environmental security event—the Indo-Pacific Environmental Security Forum (IPESF)—where civil and military partners can share and learn the latest best practices, develop collaborative projects, and advance environmental security education.
  • Provides regional civil and military partners access to unique knowledge, networks, data, and subject matter experts.
  • Identifies and executes joint environmental security projects that would likely not be accomplished in a singular setting.
  • Conducts bilateral, trilateral, and multilateral civil-military environmental security meetings that help solve regional issues.
  • Distributes the latest regional environmental security news that is applicable to both civil and military partners.
  • Provides support on issues and challenges related to the latest environmental security threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Works with and builds upon existing regional architecture to shape civil-military environmental security activities.
  • Voices concerns related to environmental security.
  • Builds invaluable relationships by offering multiple opportunities to meet face-to-face to discuss and act on key environmental security issues and topics, which facilitates mutual cooperation.

Get To Know More About IPESP

The primary purpose of the IPESP is to increase regional militaries’ understanding of these topics and their environmental stewardship obligations, and coordinate efforts with civilian agencies and NGOs for whole-of-government and whole-of-society solutions.
